LAARES specialists offer free training to our BAT and CERT members on the proper use of FRS/GMRS radios. These inexpensive radios can be extremely beneficial in a BAT (Block Action Team) environment when used correctly. They can also be a big hindrance when used without proper training. How do you make contact? how do you get your message across quickly and efficiently? How do you use your radio so you don't interfere with other BATs? This and more are covered in the free training class offered by LAARES.
The FRS/GMRS Radio Class for BATs and CERTs is approximately 1 1/2 hours long and is scheduled as needed. This training can handle a class size as small as 2 participants or as many as 10 or more. This class is typically a classroom-based class but with the advent of COVD-19, we have modified the class so it can be offered virtually via zoom.
To schedule a training session for your group, please send an email to awhipple "at" whipples.us, jim_clark "at" pacbell.net, or harrypguy "at" gmail.com. We will work with you to set up a time that best works for everyone.
This training is tailored for the Los Altos BAT (Block Action Team) and CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams) and focuses on best practices for those groups and the City of Los Altos. While any FRS/GMRS radio can be used, we focus on the Midland GXT1000VP4 since that is the recommended radio for the Los Altos BAT and CERT programs.
